Singer/songwriter John Darnielle has been cranking out the Mountain Goats albums for years, and he’s come a long way since his warbling boom box aesthetic of yore. At best count, All Eternals Deck is No. 14 in Darnielle’s catalog, but his first for North Carolina indie bastion Merge Records. Throughout the album, songs such as “Damn These Vampires,” “The Autopsy Garland,” and “High Hawk Season” rank among his finest, cramming finely orchestrated post-Americana narratives of damaged characters that have gone walkabout in a treacherous landscape. The songs are wry, cryptic, and at times quite elegant — what the world has come to expect from the Mountain Goats. Nurses open.
