The Vaginas' monologue

Adam Pointer pisses on those who wince at his band's name

Five guys walk into a bar and come out as the Vaginas. This is no transgender tale, however. Pissed off at the nerve of a group that had the audacity to bring a whole band rig to an acoustic open mic night, five young Atlanta college dropouts decided on the spot to form their own band four years ago. "So we wrote a couple of songs, people liked 'em and we've been together ever since," says the Vaginas' singer, "Easy" Adam Pointer.

They claim metal as an influence, but sound punk. "It's easier," Pointer says, adding the disclaimer that "none of us listened to punk until we started playing punk." But the band's list of influences is a bit suspect. It may be the only punk/metal band in history to list Boy George as an influence ("I was being a smart-ass," Pointer says, chortling.)

That smart-ass attitude has hurt the band at times. Some are unwilling to put the Vaginas on a marquee, while certain media outlets have refrained from putting their name in print. "The AJC music section didn't," Pointer says, regarding a past gig. "We were the headlining band and we weren't put on the bill because of this."

That doesn't mean the band has any plans to change its name. "Way I've always looked at it, there's a band called the Shins. What's the difference? It's just a body part," he says. Pointer sees himself as standard bearer of sorts. "Some people have said I'm misogynistic just because I'm an idiot, but as far as I'm concerned we're pro-feminist because we're supporting vaginas," he says, laughing.

It's obvious the band doesn't take itself too seriously. Along those lines, Pointer advises those who come out to see them that there's no need to look the part or dress punk/trendy to blend in. "We all have beer bellies. We don't fit into tight pants. As far as we're concerned, if you're at the show you're accepted, you're cool."

The Vaginas play Smiths Olde Bar with Attractive Eighties Women. $8. Thurs., June 5. 8 p.m.
