The Weeknd: Trilogy

Republic Records

Trilogy is the remastered compilation of the Weeknd's three 2011 mixtapes - House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence - plus three new tracks. The Weeknd, or Abel Tesfaye, helped resurrect R&B while adding depth to the genre with these increasingly depraved mixtapes. Rather than singing about love or even nice sex, Tesfaye wallows in vice, his death drive on full throttle as he initiates cruel hookups with blitzed women while blowing cash and trying to overdose. Distorted Beach House samples and other off-kilter, intelligent production supports his pitch-perfect croon, which sometimes eerily channels the King of Pop himself. Closing number, "Till Dawn (Here Comes the Sun)," acts as an epiphany, exposing the love triangle at the rotten, if geometrically sound, core of Trilogy. (4 out of 5 stars)
