The Center for Puppetry Arts offers an offbeat riff on one of American jazz’s greats in DUKE ELLINGTON’S CAT, continuing Tues., JAN. 15. Writer/director Jon Ludwig crafts the family-friendly retrospective of Ellington’s life and music through the eyes of his cat – and not a slang “hepcat,” either, but a four-footed feline, who helps out the Duke when some tricky mice steal the musician’s latest composition. Presented in partnership with the National Black Arts Festival, Duke Ellington’s Cat features classic tunes, original music by local jazz pianist Takana Miyamoto and the puppetry of Julie Dansby, Michael Haverty, Katie Merritt, Spencer Stephens and Clint Thornton. $9-$16.
