See & Do - Theater: Jitney April 23 2010

Tues., May 4

When August Wilson’s JITNEY premiered in 1982, few people guessed that it would kick off the playwright’s 10-play “Pittsburgh Cycle” of dramas, each set in a different decade of the 20th century, and serve as landmarks in modern American stagecraft. Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre revisits Jitney, a portrayal of a Pittsburgh gypsy cab stand facing demolition in the 1970s. Directed by Derrick Sanders and featuring Anthony Chisholm – an actor probably best known from HBO’s “Oz” – Jitney displays both the playwright’s crusading social consciousness and his boisterous sense of humor. Through May 30. $20-$35. May 2, 2:30 p.m.; May 4, 8 p.m.; Wed.-Fri., 8 p.m.; Sat., 2:30 and 8 p.m.; Sun., 2:30 p.m. Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Road. June 5-27: Alliance Theatre, 1280 Peachtree St. 877-725-8849. truecolorstheatre.org.
