JONATHA BROOKE — Following the lead of Aimee Mann and other quality/quirky singer/songwriters rejected by major labels, ex-Story-girl Brooke has acquired a larger, more dedicated audience by releasing music on her own indie than she did lost in the MCA shuffle. Confessional, err, story-based, predominantly plugged folk-rock with melodies that trot around pop’s path but never wander into predictability, Brooke is a post-Lilith artist with talent and initiative. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
CAST IRON FILTER — Charlotte roots-rock quintet Cast Iron Filter use banjos and mandolins to evoke bluegrass shadings, but for the most part the group focuses on song-oriented rootsy, Southern rock. After tonight’s headlining gig, the group opens for Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons at Smith’s Olde Bar Saturday. Brandyhouse (Sarig)
EXPERIMENTAL.CONSTRUKT — Lifeform Project, an ambient avant garde textural experiment helmed by Kula Recordings’ Ecotekh, Modal and Oliver Dodd, is deployed real time at Trinity as visual chaos by the Stimulator rei(g)ns around the room. Trinity (Ware)
AMANDA GARRIGUES, KATE SIMPKINS — Deceptively subtle Floridian Amanda Garrigues had made Atlanta her second home. The Eddie’s Attic favorite plays in town twice this week. Tonight, the oft-touring singer/songwriter plays a special, free show at the recently renovated Java Monkey. Think a more melodic Ani DiFranco, without the posturing and politics. See Kate Simpkins in Earshot, p. 81. Java Monkey-Decatur (Smith)
I AM THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, PARKER AND LILY — See I Am the World Trade Center in Earshot, p. 81. Dream-pop duo Parker and Lily shuffle so gently you’d swear you can watch the cigarette smoke hang mournfully in the air. But you’ll probably be too mesmerized by Parker and Lily’s slow and seductive reverb-drenched romanticism to worry about silly things like smoke. The Earl (Ware)
JEFF AND VIDA — It seems strange, almost anachronistic, to hear Vida’s gritty, heart-bent balladry and Jeff’s old-timey banjo and guitar twang from a compact disc — but it’s still as pleasing as a drive down a dusty mountain road. Amazingly, neither Jeff nor Vida was raised anywhere near Appalachia — one was brought up in Jersey, the other in Europe, and they now live in New Orleans. Like Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, to whom they’re frequently compared, Jeff and Vida may as well have been spoon-fed grits in a Nashville manger. As true as just about any old-time country and bluegrass you’ll here these days, they really deserve an ear. Red Light Cafe (Bethea)
PARTLY FUNNY WITH A CHANCE OF FAME! — Four musicians, each with an especially warped sense of humor, team up for a special songwriters-in-the-round event devoted to comedic tunes. Carla Ulbrich’s pretty face conceals perhaps the most offbeat sensibility of all (her song about the F-word is a jaw-dropping knee-slapper), but she’ll have plenty of competition from merry prankster Gregory Fleeman, crackfire wit Bob Malone and deviously devilish multi-instrumentalist Tom Wolf. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
