EKOOSTIK HOOKAH, LEFT FOOT DOWN — This talented Ohio jam outfit meshes jazz, folk, blues and country rock with typical Dead-style results. They’ve toured incessantly for a decade, playing marathon gigs until they — or you — drop. Yet there’s little here to distinguish Ekoostik Hookah from a passel of like-minded improv units. Knoxville-based openers Left Foot Down add ’70s Southern rock (read slide guitars) to the mix while still riding the twirly patchouli groove. Get set for a long night. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
FLYING LUTTENBACHERS — These guys don’t just dabble with the speed jazz/free metal thing, as John Zorn’s Naked City did. Their entire recorded catalog wreaks of improv-noise experimentation. But it’s a good smell. We swear. Eyedrum (Khalid)
CORY JONES, KIT RODGERS — Fans of the late, lamented (in some circles) Soul Miners Daughter can rejoice. Tonight Cory Jones, the male half of the dual Daughter sound, plays a solo show. Tomorrow night, his former Soul mate, Jennifer Nettles, has the Friday night slot. An Eddie’s spokesperson swears it was “total coincidence” that Jones and Nettles ended up playing back-to-back nights, something conspiracy-minded music-lovers can ponder over drinks in the talking area of the club. Jones’ opening act is his old buddy, Kit Rodgers, an intense folk singer/songwriter from Knoxville with pleasant acoustic pop leanings. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
KING DJANGO — The bold career of Jeff “King Django” Baker could fill a book. He’s spent the last two decades singing and playing various instruments for a handful of NYC-based ska, reggae and hardcore outfits, including Murphy’s Law, the Boilers, Skinnerbox and the Stubborn All-Stars. During that time, he’s made the unusual but valid connection between his musical roots in reggae and ska, and his Jewish heritage. His solo albums have been his most eclectic turns, incorporating dub, dancehall, rap, rock and klezmer music. Somber Reptile (Peisner)
