THURSDAY, NOV 29

CAROLINE AIKEN, DIANE DURRETT, DONNA HOPKINS -- The three tough dames of Atlanta's acoustic rock, folk and blues scenes return with their "Women-of-Rock-in-the-Round" show. Aiken is a Decatur institution, having played nearly every folk stage and festival imaginable; Durrett is a soul singer with sweatin' and testifyin' gospel roots; and Hopkins is a cookin' blues mama with a sassy, down-home attitude. Eddie's Attic (Smith)

DICK DALE -- Nobody else even bothers to crown themselves "King of the Surf Guitar" while Dale is riding the tidal wave of reverb. Still intense and unrelenting in his 60s, Dale's instrumental attack is louder and more brutal now than on timeless twang-overdrive classics like "Miserlou." Even the dingy venue's dark walls, low ceiling and tiny stage can't hold him back. Prepare to be blown away. Star Bar (Horowitz)

THE DERAILERS, GRETA LEE BAND -- See the Derailers article, p. 81. Former Atlanta roots-country queen Greta Lee returns from Nashville to open. Smith's Olde Bar (Sarig)

JAGUARES -- Saul Hernandez, a former member of Latin alt-rock notables Caifanes, heads this latest Mexican sensation, who've come as close as any Spanish-speaking rock act to crossing over into the Anglo charts. Their second album, Cuando La Sangre Galopa, is as warm and passionate as its title (which translates as "when the blood races"), but doesn't rise far above standard rock-anthem fare. Tabernacle (Sarig)

PAUL MELANCON AND THE MILLION BOX, KENNY HOWES, SHAMGOD -- Melancon's literate pop mixes equal parts Paul Revere and Paul Misraki. Tonight, the former Radiant City citizen is joined by his new band the Million Box. Guitarist Rob Gal (6X) and drummer Pete McDade (Uncle Green, 3 Pound Thrill) take Melancon's clever Difford-and-Tilbrook-ish wordplay and give it the rock band treatment it deserves. Howes performs tonight without his band the Yeah!, giving his jaunty ditties a stark showcase. Opener Shamgod offer an assertive and brittle attack on the standard indie-pop formula. The Earl (Smith)
