Sound Menu November 07 2001 Thur
ASO CHORUS — It’s hard to believe the ASO has never performed Vaughan Williams’ magnificent Sea Symphony, but this season, they’re making up for lost time. Soloists include soprano Christine Goerke and baritone Brett Polegato. Also included will be Debussy’s “Nocturnes,” a fitting siren song to accompany this musical voyage. Robert Spano conducts. Symphony Hall (Brown)
CHINASKI, HUSKY, VICTORY GIRLS — After making a huge impression of 101 things not to do right as a band, Chinaski — the epitome of living the indie rock lifestyle — break up after only two months, so its members can return to other projects. This last show is promised to be their best ever (not hard that), because they swore off practicing the month prior — and clearly, practice is what was fucking them up all along. Come be part of the final implosion. Husky do a take on spaced-out prog-rock, and Victory Girls — featuring members of Pineal Ventana — freak out on free jazz, says the word on the street. The Earl (Ware)
ELK CITY, THE NATIONAL — See Elk City in Record Reviews, p. 111. See the National article, p. 92. Echo Lounge (Ware)
FORMAT — Taking place one Thursday a month, Format offers up the hottest drum ‘n’ bass DJs spinning the dopest dub plates. This month, residents DJ Lee, of the UK’s Metalheadz, and Atlanta’s own Mayhem of Shadow Law welcome Timeless Recording artist Cause 4 Concern from London. Do you like it dark, deep and double-time? Then you fit the Format. Karma (Ware)
GMIA SONGWRITERS SHOWCASE 2001 — Always a gala night, the Georgia Music Industry Association’s annual contest features more than a dozen regional finalists playing original material in a variety of categories (rock, country, pop, urban). The performances always display genuine inspiration sprinkled with ambitious misfires. However, the ceremony itself — a miniature exercise in Emmys-style glitz and glam — is alone worth the price of admission. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
PAT GREEN — Green’s already amassed a cult following in his native Texas, where collegiate-age audiences are just as likely to wear baseball caps as Stetsons. But the singer/guitarist is poised for bigger things with the release of his major label debut, Three Days. Best known for rowdy crowd-pleasers (“I Like Beer”), Green is also on the frontlines of an invasion of new country troubadours from the Lone Star State including Charlie Robison, Clay Baker and Jack Ingram. Smith’s Old Bar (Ruggiero)
MIKE KELLY TRIO, CHARLES DAVIS — Guitarist Kelly is a talented jazz cat in his own right, but his shows this weekend also feature renowned New York saxophonist Charles Davis, whose credits include Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Cedar Walton, Hank Mobley and many others. Cafe 290 (Powell)
EDDIE PALMIERI — In a career that dates to the mid-’50s, pianist/bandleader Palmieri, 65, holds six Grammy Awards, the most recent for Masterpiece, a collaboration with Tito Puente. Perhaps best known for his 1961-68 ensemble, Conjunto La Perfecta, Palmieri’s style owes as much to McCoy Tyner, Art Tatum, Herbie Hancock and (later) Thelonious Monk as it does to his Latin roots. Sambuca Jazz Cafe (Powell)
PILLAR — Listen closely to the music of Christian rap-rock act Pillar, beyond the hip turntable scratches, heavy guitar breakdowns and aggressive vocal flow, and you’ll hear lyrics like “At the same time that we praise God, we make the crowd jump up, we’ll make your heads bob.” The effect is that of Fred Durst getting zapped by some divine seminary ray — truly surreal. For info, call 770-546-3294. Studio 3:16/Cartersville (Hutchinson)
SYSTEM OF A DOWN — Who would have guessed that four Armenian-American metalheads would release one of the only great heavy-metal albums of the last year? On Toxicity, their new LP, System Of A Down combines chugging grind-core riffs with Middle Eastern stylings and instrumentation to create a truly eclectic sound that sets the group apart from the myriad of Korn clones that populate the genre. Tabernacle (Jordan)
JERRY JEFF WALKER — Best known for writing the ’60s hit “Mr. Bojangles,” this amiable Texan retreated from commercial recording in the early ’80s and has since concentrated on having a good time. Heralded as a genius by many, Walker’s fans include Jimmy Buffet, Hunter S. Thompson and Willie Nelson. His laid-back, rollicking shows are always memorable and his band — the Gonzo Compadres — now includes Austin guitar legend Mitch Watkins. Variety Playhouse (Stephens)
