Tim Hecker/Daniel Lopatin: Instrumental Tourist

Software Recording Co.

Tim Hecker and Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never) have collaborated to create Instrumental Tourist, the first album in the SStudios Series. If elegiac, white noise makes you calm and warm, enjoy. Chinese flutes, slow-motion accordions, and other disembodied instrumentation add a worldly flair to the 12 songs that make up the disc. Each number stops and goes abruptly, a little in the way of real-world travel, and the effect disrupts the otherwise expansive flow of the album in which Hecker's Rorschach sonic-blots dissolve into Lopatin's sprawling keyboard effects to take you somewhere abstract. Wherever that place may be, the sometimes absurd, sometimes unsettling dreamscapes of mechanical moans, creaking doors, breezy tunnel ways, and other aural cues abound - dive in. (4 out of 5 stars)
