Top 5: Bars for college students in Atlanta

SIDEBAR Only a block away from Georgia State, Sidebar's locale is almost too convenient for students to walk to after their last class, books still in hand. This college watering hole comes complete with pool tables, air hockey, video poker, electronic trivia, and large booths with room enough for everyone on your dorm room's floor to enjoy an ice-cold pint. Mon.-Wed., 11 a.m.-midnight; Thurs.-Fri, 11-2 a.m.; Sat., noon-2 a.m.; Sun., noon-midnight. 79 Poplar St. 404-588-1850.

FAMOUS PUB With plasma TVs that broadcast the latest game, it's safe to say this Emory bar caters to the sports crowd. But with a diverse food menu featuring everything from a steak and shrimp platter to broccoli chicken alfredo, non-sports fans may be able to block out all that cheering long enough to devour some heavenly food. Cheap drinks and Texas Hold 'Em Wednesdays also make this spot one of Atlanta's best college hangouts. Mon.-Fri., 11 a.m.-4 a.m.; Sat.-Sun., 11 a.m.-3 a.m. 2947 N. Druid Hills Road. 404-633-3555.

HOLE IN THE WALL Despite its location in Buckhead, this after-hours joint has decently priced drinks -- $3 pitchers and $5 Jager bombs -- not to mention billiards, karaoke, beer pong, pool and dancing -- lots of dancing with twentysomethings from Tech, State and Emory. Wed.-Sat., 9 p.m.-2:30 a.m. 3177 Peachtree Road. 404-844-6403.

MOE'S & JOE'S BAR & GRILL Open since 1947, Moe's & Joe's has remained almost exactly the same with its cracked vinyl booths and peeling wallpaper. Although it's not the ultimate place for a classy meal, this Virginia-Highland dive bar is flooded with college students -- especially those on a budget -- every Tuesday and Thursday for its great beer specials. Mon.-Sat., 11-2 a.m.; Sun., 11:30 a.m.-midnight. 1033 N. Highland Ave. 404-873-6090.

PEACHTREE TAVERN Located in the heart of Buckhead, the Peachtree Tavern hits high on the list of bars for the younger-but-still-legal crowd with its $1 draft Tuesdays and karaoke Mondays. Plus, they host cover bands many nights, so everyone can sing along to all the hits from the '80s and '90s. Mon.-Sat.. 9 p.m.-2 a.m.; Sun., 9 p.m.-midnight. 3179 Peachtree Road. 404-842-1700.
