Atlanta Community Food Bank
The 29-year-old Food Bank collects nearly 22 million pounds of donated food a year, distributing to hundreds of homeless shelters, soup kitchens and senior centers. Your DeKalb Farmer's Market Recycling Center
Reduce, reuse, recycle's the name of the game at the Your DeKalb Farmer's Market recycling center. Located in the parking lot's south end, the center has a bin for everything from glass to plastic to ex-boyfriends (OK, almost everything). Reusing resources helps reduce the amount of waste you produce, leaving more room on the Earth for, well, earth. There's also a composting station with DIY info. Daily, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. 3000 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur. 404-377-6400. www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com.
Critical Mass Atlanta
Are you a rough rider? If so, show off your skills with Critical Mass Atlanta the last Friday of every month. Critical Mass is a pro-bike (not anti-car) movement that promotes the use of bicycles as a practical means of transportation. The event extends beyond Atlanta, too, as riders meet in most major cities around the world on the same day. Last Friday of every month, 6 p.m. Woodruff Park, Peachtree Street and Auburn Avenue. www.criticalmassatlanta.org.
When school gets stressful and you're feeling blue, go green as a volunteer for Trees Atlanta. Volunteers are needed every Saturday morning for tree planting, weeding and greenspace projects around Atlanta. Best of all, anyone driving by will think you're a good person! Saturdays, 9 a.m.-noon. 225 Chester Ave. 404-522-4097. www.treesatlanta.org.
Centers for Civic Engagement
Most schools have a Center for Civic Engagement -- basically a Rolodex of community involvement opportunities with nonprofits; local elementary, middle and high schools; alternative holiday breaks; and campus-centered activities. Getting involved through your college or university's Center for Civic Engagement is good for your heart and social life, since you'll be volunteering with fellow students. Contact info varies per school.
