BACHELOR RED -- Former Pleasantdales frontman Mike Schmeelk has a new band (featuring former Shrunked Head drummer Alex Pilson) called Bachelor Red. The quartet performs in the acoustic format every Tuesday night in January at this Decatur food and music joint. Ya Ya's (Sarig)

KITTIE -- The good news about these cantankerous Canadian vixens is threefold: 1) they know how to play; 2) they know how to rock; and 3) they're young enough to know they don't know everything -- and as such, there's plenty of room for improvement. While Oracle, the girls' latest release, doesn't so much improve on Kittie's self-righteous death-metal/glam union as it does kick up the Metallica a notch, the future bodes well for any young band with the brass to convincingly tackle Pink Floyd's "Run Like Hell." Opening the show is bilingual South American (by way of New Jersey) sextet Ill Nino, whose disturbing, often exhilarating debut, Revolution ... Revolucion, documents the controlled chaos that ensues when flamenco grows bleach-blond dreadlocks and head-butts the riff-addled masses in the cojones. Masquerade (Rowland)

LIL' ED & THE BLUES IMPERIALS -- His uncle was slide guitar whiz J.B. Hutto and he wears a wacky red fez. That's all you need to know about Chicago's rollicking Lil' Ed Williams. His shows are a non-stop boogie party with lots of raw energy, and the kind of refreshingly mindless blues that'll let you forget the world outside for a few hours. He's a pro and even on off nights keeps the sweat pouring and the place jumping. Blind Willie's (Horowitz)
