Sound Menu June 27 2001 Tues
ATERCIOPELADOS — Columbian duo Aterciopelados are part of that wonderful third wave of Latin music invading the U.S. alongside Ricky Martin’s glitzy pop of and the Buena Vista Social Club’s old-school classicism. Big stars in South America, Aterciopelados update the tropicalistas’ tendency to mix local folk styles with hip American sounds (alt-pop, lounge, electronica) and progressive politics. Their 200 CD, Gozo Poderoso, suggests the group (whose name translates to the Velvety Ones) is well worth seeking out. International Ballroom (Sarig)
BENEFIT FOR DONNIE MCCORMICK — Known around Atlanta for tapping out a rhythm on a chicken coop and anything else in the building, Donnie McCormick has made quite an impact on the music scene, playing with the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead. Paying tribute on the first of the two-day event are Tonohoney, Mike Veal & the DeVilles, Bear Facts and a jam with Barry Richman, Sean Costello and McCormick himself. The door proceeds go to help McCormick while he recovers from multiple heart attacks suffered in April. Northside Tavern (Keel)
HAYSEED DIXIE — If this band’s name sounds oddly similar to that of a classic Aussie hard-rock band, it’s no accident. The novelty act’s debut CD offers a bluegrass and Appalachian folk take on songs such as “Highway to Hell” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Besides uniting music that rednecks actually like with a tradition they’re associated with by stereotype, there’s not much to be gleaned from this band’s one-joke schtick. Entertaining, however, it certainly is. Smith’s Olde Bar (Sarig)
KAREN KAY — Kicking off the Open-Mic Finalist Showcase at 8 p.m. is the honey-throated singer/songwriter from Missouri who describes her own material as “either pretty or pretty weird.” That’s a surprisingly accurate assessment of her unique stage act. Imagine Joan Baez singing about UFOs and you get the idea. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
R. KELLY, SUNSHINE ANDERSON, SYLEENA JOHNSON — Once R. Kelly got everyone to believe that he could fly, he has returned to the boot-knockin’ songs that made him famous with his recent release TP-2.com. Meanwhile, Sunshine Anderson’s current hit, “Heard It All Before,” posits her as a cross between Helen Reddy and Lauryn Hill. Kelly’s latest protégé/diva/zombie Syleena Johnson opens.
