Sound Menu May 30 2001 Tues

FOETUS, DRILL TEAM — Godfather of the apocalypse, Foetus returns from a six-year hiatus with a new album and a new lineup featuring former members of Swans, Unsane and Congo Norvell; see article. East Atlanta rockers Drill Team, featuring former members of Tweezer and Fiend Without a Face, open the show. Echo Lounge (Radford)

CURTIS SALGADO — This rugged soul singer/harpist is a veteran rock journeyman, having logged time with Roomful of Blues, Robert Cray’s band and his own groups for almost three decades. A solid songwriter in his own right, Salgado effortlessly transforms even potential schlock like “Every Time You Go Away” into R&B classics. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)

SLANG — More than just another side project, Slang is a significant departure for Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools. With collaborator Layng Martine III — son a famed Nashville songwriter and assistant to eclectic dub/electronic producer Bill Laswell — Schools crafts an impressive debut, The Bellwether Project (on local label Terminus). Combining rootsy guitars, keys and horns with vocal effects, samples, beats and scratches, Slang creates modern-primitive mood pieces that neither bore you with jams nor pander with repetitive loops. Schools and Martine host a listening party tonight, where they’ll be signing and giving away free CDs. Smith’s Olde Bar (Sarig)
