Record Review - Turbo Fruits: Echo Kid

Fat Possum Records

Be Your Own Pet ex-guitarist Jonas Stein has successfully extracted the fire-in-the-gut charge that made his former band great and retrofitted it with the sound of exuberance. Even when momentary lapses of melancholy creep into “Hold Me” and “My Stupid Heart,” Echo Kid is a jittery record that gets by on the tools of garage punk hopped-up on dirty amphetamines. “Naked With You” is a ramped-up number that recalls the sex-obsessed beat of the British Invasion, minus the naivety. The group’s ever-juvenile M.O. gets tiresome by the time “Dear Moses” brings the album to a close, but the balance of slightly polished production over measured, high-energy hooks culminates in a collection of good, but not so clean fun. 3 out of 5 stars.
