Upcoming: Short List

Kingsized, Save Our Bookstore and more

August 15 Friday

Wordsmiths Books doesn't mess around when it comes to reliably cool events. And its SAVE OUR BOOKSTORE fundraiser weekend is no different. Friday night's "Saving Bookstores Is AWESOME!!! Night of AWESOME!!!" features a reading by Jack Pendarvis, a performance from Atlanta indie rockers Sealions, and a silent robot auction – the auctioning of actual robots in their various guises. Day two offers a "pay what you can" sliding-scale fee for an afternoon with Poetry Atlanta and Kodac Harrison. Fri., 7:30 p.m.; Sat., 2 p.m. 545 N. McDonough St., Decatur. 404-378-7166. (Amber Robinson)

August 16 Saturday

Paying homage to the King himself, Big Mike Geier and his KINGSIZED crew will be at the Variety Playhouse for his annual death-day tribute to the one and only Elvis Presley. Reworking classic Elvis standards, Kingsized will bring a touch of Vegas to the Little Five Points hot spot. While the band curls its lips and plunges head-first into the music, Atlanta-based Dames Aflame will be on hand to titillate the crowd. $22.50-$25. 8 p.m. 1099 Euclid Ave. 404-524-7354. (Alicia Wages)

August 16 Saturday

It takes a village. The WE ARE ALL ONE BLOCK PARTY strives for such unity to ensure positive change and community empowerment. This gathering of minds chases an admittedly lofty goal – harnessing the energy of activists of all stripes to promote awareness, participation and connectedness. Among the offerings: live graffiti mural painting, Unit2 capoeira demos, Laura Reed & Deep Pocket, Georgia for Democracy's film screening and discussion panel, ATL Funklordz Bboy Crew and more. Free-$10. Noon-3 a.m. Five Spot, 1123 Euclid Ave. 770-361-5967. (Amber Robinson)
