Various Artists: The Runaways: Music from the Motion Picture

Atlantic

To answer your question, yes, Kristen Stewart can sing. For the most part. Her voice is a bit thin, but when you're channeling rockers the Runaways, technical chops aren't as important as chutzpah and attitude. In this regard, she and fellow New Moon actress Dakota Fanning succeed almost as well as the southern California teen group they're covering on The Runaways soundtrack. Interspersed with their versions of "Queens of Noise" and "Cherry Bomb" are original Runaways tracks including "Hollywood" and a live version of "I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are." With its scorching guitars and anguished wailings, the latter brings real heat. Elsewhere are predictable punk and pre-punk anthems such as David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" from the Stooges, along with nice surprises like MC5's "It's a Man's Man's World." Nothing too exciting for those familiar with these songs, but for the film's teen audience, they will be a revelation. 3 out of 5 stars.
