Weaklazyliar's take two

The November Diaries, Weaklazyliar's follow-up to 1999's Yesterday Night, was almost called "The Chaos Diaries" for a good reason. To save money, the band decided to demo it at home, then take it to a studio to do overdubs. But as the recording process continued, the band became increasingly dissatisfied with the results. "We knew it could be better," says singer/guitarist Gerlinda Grimes. "It didn't suck, but we knew we could play better."

After it was completed, Grimes and the rest of the group -- Chris Mathewson (bass), Ryan Taylor (keyboards), Joe Knoll (drums) -- decided it wasn't the album they wanted to make. And so, aided by money from soundtrack placements in TV series like "Felicity," Weaklazyliar went into Zero Return studios with producer Rob del Bueno and reworked the material.

The band's persistence paid off. The finished CD, a beguilingly frank still-life portrait of regret, remorse and possibilities, was, at press time, among the top 20 most-added releases at college radio stations nationwide. The band plans on touring the U.S. this summer to support it.

Grimes admits November's stark autumnal chill makes the album a somber listen. "Hopefully our next record will be put your car-top down fun stuff," she laughs. "I'm tired of being deep."

Weaklazyliar plays a CD release party at Eddie's Attic Sun., May 12.
