GOV’T MULE — Get behind the new Mule as Widespread Panic’s Dave Schools fills the bass slot and the beloved, always dependable Chuck Leavell lends his distinctive keyboard touch. They’ll add even more class, talent and subtlety to the band’s boogie/blues/jam aesthetic. Superb guitarist Warren Haynes leads the charge, and when these talented guys lock together, they kick up serious intensity that leaves other jam-styled bands in the dirt. Georgia Theater/Athens (Horowitz)

TAMMY FOWLER — A skillful and amusing solo female singer/songwriter, Tammy Fowler is folksy, funny, warm, accessible and (a rarity in this genre) refreshingly self-deprecating. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)

MICHELLE MALONE — Malone’s forthcoming CD, Hello Out There, isn’t coming out until May, but early-birders can snatch it at local shows like this one. Those familiar with her more bluesy rocking material may be surprised to hear Hello’s poppier side, including the bouncy “Super Ball.” Alabama-based Wayne opens. Smith’s Olde Bar (Sarig)

THE OVERTON [ELECTROACOUSTIC] WORKSHOP — Adam Overton, percussionist/tape operator for local electro-jazz outfit Wislov and various other projects, presents a “workshop” (sounds, uh, challenging) featuring saxophonist Ben Davis, guitarist Patrick Foley, bassist Rob Handley and himself on drums and effects. It gets rolling at midnight. MJQ (Sarig)

THE SHAZAM, KICKSTAND, MODELTONES — Kickstand begin their month of Wednesdays at the Star Bar. Scene vet Ray Dafrico’s rag-tag bunch of scrappers kick up some dust when they feel like it, and they should be in rowdy spirits tonight. Nashville’s The Shazam are a Sweet and Cheap Trick-influenced power-pop combo that rock mightily. The Modeltones make no-frills pop/rock. Star Bar (Smith)

SUPERDRAG, THE FORTY-FIVES, GREENHORNES — Superdrag, a Knoxville-based power-pop combo is a wall of fuzz guitar, a steady 4/4 beat, and enough ’60s and ’80s pop sense to keep things lighthearted and hooky. The Forty-Fives wallow in the grit of raw Kinks and Who-style British rock as played by the MC5. Ohio’s Greenhornes rock with the same ’60s soulful abandon as the others on this bill. Echo Lounge (Smith)

TOP-OF-THE-TREE SEMIFINALS — Trances Arc, Eden and Tentilfour square off tonight for the chance to compete for 12 hours of recording time at Tree Sound Studio. CJ’s Landing (Sarig)

JOHNNY YOUNG — Former Mick Taylor sideman Young is a straight-ahead rocker fronting a tight power trio. This blind New York guitarist won an Emmy for composing the “Guiding Light” theme, but since has radically shifted gears from soaps to frothy, no-frills, blues-rock with Kiss and AC/DC-styled licks a-flyin’. Unapologetically loud, thumping, loud, in-your-face, fist-in-the-air — did we mention loud? — rock, the high-energy riff-driven, stomping trio comes alive in concert. Spine also performs. Dark Horse Tavern (Horowitz/Smith)
