Sound Menu April 11 2001 Wed week out
BENEFIT FOR THE ATLANTA HEAT — Hilarious local singer/songwriter Blake Guthrie (“Coffeehouses”) returns from retirement tonight leading an all-new band, Getaway Car, which also includes former Dayroom drummer Brad Zimmerman. Rosa Believes and folk/rocker Sue Witty share the bill. Admission for this 8 p.m. show is a $6 donation to the Atlanta Heat women’s rugby team ($5 with a student I.D.). Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
KICKSTAND, JIMMY AND THE TEASERS, GREYHOUNDS — Ray Dafrico’s rock quartet Kickstand continues their Wednesday residency, this time sharing the stage with the wild, Cramps-like North Carolina trio Jimmy and the Teasers (a lunatic frontman, backed by an all-girl rhythm section. Also on the bill are the Greyhounds, a personal favorite of Kickstand bassist (and Tom Waits lookalike) Scott Shamel. Star Bar (Nicoll)
KING’S INDIAN — Simple and effective if somewhat lacking in imagination, Atlanta’s King’s Indian write songs with an easygoing college-bar band feel. With upfront acoustic guitar drive and eclectic stylistic sensibilities, the band wears a prominent Dave Matthews Band/Phish patch of influence on its musical sleeve. Dark Horse Tavern (Hutchinson)
PHIL LESH & FRIENDS — Playing old Grateful Dead chestnuts, deep jazz cuts and rock standards, Phil & Friends will infuse fans with fun from the stage and a loose sort of precision. Keep in mind, Lesh is on the road due to his love of music and this love has an unusual habit of getting through in a way unlike other bands. Regardless of how much focus regional cats Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes receive, Lesh will astound with his bass playing and ability to lead from one musical territory to another. Lesh hasn’t played Atlanta for six years so don’t wait to “catch him next time.” Civic Center (Prusin)
LIL’ ED AND THE BLUES IMPERIALS — The little guy with a big sound, Ed and his crack Chicago band shoot off, a Hound Dog Taylor/Elmore James brand of tireless, houserocking sparks. Raw, sizzling and non-stop, this is high-energy, no-frills blues guitar rowdiness for the party animal in you. Drink up, ‘cause when he slips on that slide and jumps into the audience, there’s no turning back. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)
MATCHBOX TWENTY, EVERCLEAR, LIFEHOUSE — The headliner’s middling crunch pop, Everclear’s smart power-trio attack and (double) concept album reach, or Lifehouse’s faceless, moody, anthemic arena rock justifies the expansive venue, but collectively there may just be enough good moments to make this an enjoyable, if hardly challenging evening of MTV-oriented alt-rock. It’ll all sound tight, rehearsed, relatively inspired and exactly like the band’s respective albums, which is precisely the problem. Philips Arena (Horowitz)
THE OVERTON WORKSHOP — Also known as Adam Overton’s senior jazz recital, the performance will feature compositions by Radiohead, Autechre, Steve Lacy and Overton himself. With Overton (drums, electronics) will be Dusty Cicero and Ben Davis on saxophones, Daniel Clay on guitar and Rob Handley on basses. DJ Chris Case opens. Eyedrum (Keel)
THE VALENTINE KILLERS — Pull punk rock from 1970s Detroit and fly it over to Seattle in the year 2000, and you get the fast, sloppy, but somehow contemporary energy of the Valentine Killers. Vocalist Brian LaManna’s loosely annunciated growling really only can be described as an approximation of the English language. Earl (Hutchinson)
