KEB’ MO’, BELA FLECK — Keb’ Mo’ is both an intriguing character and unabashed success story. He utilizes contemporary production values in his recordings, helping him connect as a relevant modern artist. Simultaneously, he taps the deep blues roots of Robert Johnson, Son House and others with a sincerity that validates him among blues fans. Eclectic banjo ace Bela Fleck has done much the same, although his turf, ranging from bluegrass to jazz, is harder to define. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Powell)
TOMMY MALONE — Ex-Subdude singer/songwriter Malone drops the Louisiana zydeco and focuses on straight-up rocking R&B, with slight funk edges, on his debut solo disc. Raw and earnest, Malone keeps the energy sizzling and the tunes tight as he whips through rollicking soul with nods to Crescent City and Memphis greats. Infectious, honest and completely unpretentious in an NRBQ kinda way, this is bar band music of the highest quality. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
PERNICE BROTHERS — The Pernice Brothers’ recent release, The World Won’t End tinkers only slightly with the group’s happy/sad formula, muscling in on the pervasive wistfulness with the occasional electric guitar and propulsive groove. You might even say World rocks out on occasion — though to truly appreciate where the Pernice Brothers are coming from, you really need to purge your inner rock demon, if only temporarily. RIO NEGRO — Young local Latin jazz act Rio Negro performs a free concert in the park, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The group opens for smooth jazz guitarist Jonathan Butler. Centennial Olympic Park (Sarig)
ROLLINS BAND — Near-legendary front-man and self-titled “throat,” Henry Rollins comes to town on the verge of the release of his band’s latest hard-rock juggernaut, Nice. Just a year after the release of Get Some Go Again, the sound on this album is as raw and vocal-cord shredding as ever. Rollins, in his 21st year of touring, long ago devoted himself to brutal lyrical honesty and some of the most intense delivery in rock. Sure to get the adrenaline pumping. Masquerade (Bethea)
SUGAR RAY, UNCLE KRACKER, THE START — If you’ve listened to pop radio at all the last five years, you undoubtedly have at least a passing familiarity with Sugar Ray. The band’s phenomenal success seems so post-modern, based more on image/lifestyle choice than actual musical merit. Also on the bill is Uncle Kracker, a Kid Rock protégé, whose rap ‘n’ rawk schtick is about as fresh as year-old bong water. The Start is an alt-rock band that cultivates a sound almost as generic as its name. Tabernacle (Robertson)
