BLUE PLATE SPECIAL — Local poet/bandleader Kodac Harrison’s monthly potluck of original music and poetry launches its second year of no-cover, no-telling entertainment in East Atlanta. Gravity Pub (Sarig)
CHUCK BRODSKY, FELIX MCTEIGUE — Asheville-based acoustic guitarist and storyteller Chuck Brodsky ambles into town to sing and make a few wise comments about the world. Currently touring to support his Last of the Old Time album, Brodsky is one of the few songwriters on both the Dr. Demento and Mountain Stage radio shows. Opening is Felix McTeigue, son of Maggie Roche of the Roches. Like Rufus Wainwright, McTeague was born with quirky and literate folkie genes but writes sharp, wonderfully catchy acoustic pop. Jeff & Vida also open (see listing for Thurs., Aug. 23). Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
DEBBIE DAVIES — L.A.-born blues guitarist Debbie Davies synthesized her style chiefly from Eric Clapton and her mentor Albert Collins. Davies backed up Collins in the late ’80s, and his chilly style continues to inform hers. Davies has always lacked flash, and has always made up for it in authenticity. Blind Willie’s (R. Kelly)
HOT AUGUST KNIGHTS, CADILLAC JONES — An unlikely and hilarious success story, Atlanta’s Hot August Knights make punk-rock mincemeat out of Neil Diamond’s cheesy repertoire, while also managing to attract large, eager audiences at the same time. Opening act Cadillac Jones gets the crowd’s motor running with a warmup set of equally theatrical glitz ‘n’ glam rock. Smith’s Old Bar (Nicoll)
ROCK*A*TEENS — As Atlanta’s eccentric indie-rock big-boys prepare an EP for release on local label Moodswing, they join free-rock trio the Flakes and Har Mar Superstar for tonight’s installment of “Eyedrum Goes to the Star Bar.” Star Bar (Sarig)
DAVID SANBORN, JOE SAMPLE — Sanborn has an instantly recognizable sax tone and more than a quarter-century of R&B/dance/jazz recordings. He began in blues, though, working with Albert King and Paul Butterfield in the ’60s. He’s also worked with everyone from David Bowie to the Brecker Brothers. Pianist Sample, by contrast, is more strictly a jazz player. He was a founding member of the early-’60s ensemble, the Jazz Crusaders, but evolved from his hard-bop origins into a more lyrical approach, particularly after launching a solo career in 1978. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Powell)
WEDNESDAY WIND DOWN — Centennial Park hosts an after-work mid-week showcase of local poets and musicians, beginning at 5 p.m. Sharrif Simmons, Jessica Care-More, Ayodele, Chiedza, CL contributor Ed Garnes and others present their work once yours is over. Centennial Olympic Park (Sarig)
