WEDNESDAY, DEC 12

CRYBABY, 3D5SPD, THE YUM YUM TREE -- The intense caffeine rush of Crybaby anchors the second of five Wednesday residency shows tonight. Prog and proud of it, 3d5spd open with a heady set that's likely to feature material from its Radial Quartet album. Confectionary sweetheart Andy Gish and her defiantly hard-rocking pop band, The Yum Yum Tree -- one of Atlanta's best live acts this year -- should be the pure cane sugar in this strong black coffee evening. Star Bar (Smith)

KICKSTAND -- This fiery local rock 'n' roll machine just keeps getting better with the addition of gleaming new speed-shop accessories. Not only have they added Jeff Guinness (Dragline, Dry County Drunks) on second guitar, but they've also picked up a keyboardist Lee Haraway to inject an extra Kinks-like kick into the group's already high-octane pop. The Earl (Nicoll)

MOTOWN MUSIC LOUNGE TOUR -- Motown Records takes the liberty of introducing uninformed consumers to the rising stars of tomorrow with its 15-city lounge tour. The show features Prophet Jones, an R&B quartet whose street edge, flashy leather pants and peanut butter Timbs are the perfect match for their bouncy debut single, "Woof," but don't quite fit their mushy wedding ballads. Keeping up with the Joneses are Sharissa, R&B's latest soulful, sexy Whitney Houston-inspired songstress, and neo-soul singer/multi-instrumentalist Remy Shand. Also performing: Detroit native Lathun, whose bass-heavy songs were featured on two of So So Def's all-star compilations. Kaya (Perry)

FRANCINE REED -- Atlanta's queen of upscale blues, old-school R&B and effortless jazz lends her mighty pipes to the cabaret setting for three consecutive Wednesdays in December (Dec. 5, 12 and 19). Libby's Cabaret (Sarig)

STEAMROLLERS, BLUE VELVETS -- Simply put, the Steamrollers flat-out rock. Featuring impish Brit wit Kevin Jennings, the 'Rollers shake and pop like Steve Marriott in a drunken brawl with the Who. Not for the humorless, the Blue Velvets offer a swift kick of witty and rollicking pub rock in the finest alcohol-fueled Lowe and Edmunds tradition. Blue Cat opens. Smith's Olde Bar (Smith)
