Sound Menu July 04 2001 Wed week out

AREA:ONE — See article, p. 67. Main stage lineup features Nelly Furtado, The Roots, Incubus, OutKast and Moby; second stage presents Rinocerose, Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold and the Innovators. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Ware)

CESARIA EVORA — Her cigarette and cognac-soaked voice has been compared to Billie Holiday’s, and there is no doubt that the word diva was invented for artists of this caliber. Yet, this Cape Verde Islands singer didn’t make her first album until she was 47. Now, a dozen years and six great albums later, she’s finally in Atlanta, to promote her new Sao Vicente di longe. Ruben Blades opens. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Falstaff)

HARICOT VERT, SOME SOVIET STATION — Hard-driving local post-punk quartet and Moodswing labelmates Some Soviet Station join indie-rock brethren as Haricot Vert dives into the second week of its Wednesday-nights-in-July residency. Star Bar (Sarig)

SPEEDBUGGY, INVISIBLE MEN — Cowpunk perps Speedbuggy gallop through a musical town where the horses have pierced noses; black leather saddles are worn by humans and animals alike; and spurs can be found on every part of the body. Just ‘cause the punk-country thing has been done doesn’t mean it ain’t still fun. Like their horror movie namesake, the Invisible Men occasionally inspire a creepy, organ-flavored punk-rock scare. In its more unfortunately generic moments, however, this is an act that would be better seen than heard. Under the Couch (Hutchinson)
