THE GO-GO’S — The surf-influenced five-piece, born in the L.A. punk scene of the late ’70s, wrote and played their own material and released an impressive body of work during the kinetic new-wave phase of the ’80s. Though they disappeared for a while, the band is currently touring to support its first new album in 17 years, God Bless the Go-Go’s. Tabernacle (Smith)
HARICOT VERT, HELL MACH 4 — Local Moodswing band Hell Mach 4 joins labelmates Haricot Vert tonight on the final night of the latter band’s Wednesday night Star Bar residency. Haricot Vert’s oft-misspelled name is taken from the French for green beans, which when preceded by the definite article les and spoken in a fast, Cajun style, lent itself to naming the genre zydeco. This band, however, has no accordions or washboards. Neither do the trio Hell Mach 4, a paradoxically rawer and more prog-ish trio than the tightly wound headliner. Star Bar (Sarig)
EMMYLOU HARRIS, PATTY GRIFFIN — Emmylou’s the undisputed queen of Americana and carries the torch proudly. Redefining herself over the past few years, Harris’ current band, Spyboy, features guitarist and vocalist Buddy Miller, who brings the sound full circle with his unique playing and incredible harmonies. Gram would be proud. Opener Patty Griffin hung in as long as she could after Universal acquired her label, A&M. But after her third album, Silver Bell, languished on hold for more than a year, Griffin is officially shopping for a new label. As for Bell’s contents, some are forecasting a return to the more organic personal reflection of her 1996 debut, especially given the polished full-band format and topical nature of 1998’s Flaming Red. KING CRIMSON — Crimson leader Robert Fripp once called his unit a heavy metal band, evoking the ire of many a progressive rock fan. Depending on what section of what song you happen to hear, you just might believe him. Most groups from that era long have passed into geezerville, but King Crimson replenishes old habits with buckets from the fountain of youth. Variety Playhouse (Foy)
TONY FURTADO BAND — Virtuoso string man Furtado has all but abandoned his bluegrass roots to explore more eclectic territory in blues, folk, Celtic and jazz-fusion. Like Ry Cooder, a major influence on his sound, Furtado’s impeccable chops on slide guitar and banjo never overwhelm the material. But when he decides to open up, his talent is astonishing. A forward-looking traditionalist, Furtado is most thrilling live. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
VANS WARPED TOUR ‘01 — The full-day eXtravaganza of music, games and heat returns. Bands are numerous, but highlights include local favorites Ultrababyfat, Omaha’s pot-fueled proto-rap-metal 311, post-hardcore skate-punks Pennywise, original DIY rude boys Rancid, the pop-encrusted emocore of Jimmy Eat World, the anything-goes weirdness of Kool Keith, the late ’70s revivalism of the Explosion and the bouncy, silly sing-a-long quality of ska-punks Less Than Jake.
