WEDNESDAY, NOV 28

DR. DAN -- Like his inspiration, Herbie Hancock, the phenomenal keyboardist and co-founder of the Fiji Mariners is as comfortable jamming on acoustic piano as he is with the funky electronics that form the majority of his catalog. Dan's talented and diverse enough to keep an audience captivated for two long sets. Smith's Olde Bar (Horowitz)

CHRIS LEE BAND, GIRL CHRIS, ALLISON KENDRA HUNT -- The Chris Lee Band's biggest attraction might be his drummer, Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley. As for North Carolina native Lee, he's a blue-eyed soul crooner in the Paul Weller style. His most recent album, Plays and Sings Torch'd Songs, Charivari Hymns & Oriki Blue Marches (on Shelley's Smells Like Records), serves up a good selection of steamy, tortured-soul blues-rock. Girl Chris features Yellow from Insane Jane, who also knows a thing or two about dramatic vocals. Her muscular pipes may even cause the dining mob in The Earl's front room to take notice. Ditto Allison Kendra Hunt, who defies the typical female singer/songwriter stereotype, using her beautiful voice to overcome the odds at this usually noisy club. The Earl (Smith)

MAZARIN, AEREOGRAMME -- See article, p. 79. Glasgow-based loud-to-soft control freaks Aereogramme open. MJQ Concourse (Roland)

ROBERT MIRABAL -- Native American renaissance man Robert Mirabal -- a musician, flute maker, author and actor -- presents his elaborate show, which combines Native American dance and storytelling with live music informed by various styles and cultures. It's the sort of mid-brow stuff passing as highbrow that PBS eats up -- hence Mirabal's popular PBS special. To many of us, it just sounds like New Age and middle-of-the-road rock dressed in the symbols of a culture most of us know shamefully little about. Too little, that is, to judge this show as jive. Variety Playhouse (Sarig)

PROCESS:ATLANTA -- Shadow-law Recordings, atlharddrive.com and Encore Entertainment continue to feature some of the UK's top drum 'n' bass talent on the same bills as Atlanta's finest. If you like dem ruff rollers, then an evening with DJs Fierce, Simlock, Jesper and Brain is for you. Karma (Ware)
