What lies above

Visual Art

In conventional landscape paintings, it is often the land that commands the artist's complete attention. Elizabeth Stockton's solo exhibition SANCTUARY, at Twinhouse Gallery through DEC. 31, turns that hierarchy on its head with dreamy, soothing paintings that privilege enormous expanses of sky. Looming overhead in shades of dusky tan, rose and pale yellow, Stockton's skies dominate her marshes and waterways, suggesting an unknown world extending above and beyond our reach. In this way, Stockton reimagines the landscape and conveys some of the mystical grandeur of being dwarfed and humbled by nature. Free. Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 2815 Peachtree Road. 404-233-3433.
