Welcome to Foodie Phonetics, an occasional series in which we explore the names of food items that you might be mispronouncing. Let's help each other avoid embarrassing moments one dish at a time!

Pronouncing Greek words can be a tongue twister. Tzatziki (“dzah-DZEE-kee”), however, is worth adding to your vocabulary — and rotation of summer dishes. This cucumber, yogurt, garlic, and dill sauce can add a zing of flavor and cooling freshness to gyros, burgers or even be used as a dip for chips and veggies.

Have you found it hard to stay on top of all the new spirits being distilled here in Atlanta and its surrounding counties? Welcome to Drink Local, a semi-regular series in which we'll feature and taste a range of local products, starting with the four local distilleries highlighted in our Made in Georgia Spring Dining Guide

Our aim is to enable you to walk in to your local liquor store (or favorite bar) armed with a basic knowledge of the local goods on the shelves. Today, we'll introduce you to Independent Rum, from Independent Distilling Company in Decatur.

  • BACK TO BASICS: Kimball House's new cocktail lounge focuses on cocktails, small plates, oysters, and caviar service.

Spencer Gomez, who spent the past year at Gunshow, where he did a lot of “charcuterie work and meat-focused dining,” is the new chef de cuisine at Holeman and Finch Public House. Gomez said he learned of the opening and thought it would be a good fit. Gomez plans “to further enhance the kitchen’s commitment to locally sourced and tantalizing creations” at Holeman and Finch and has no plans to overhaul the menu or the kitchen.

Kimball House’s backroom cocktail lounge and private dining room, Bonanza, is now open. The lounge is complete with a separate entrance, a bathroom, and a kitchen. Bonanza’s menu focuses on “cheese, charcuterie, and a small selection of composed plates” as well as oysters and caviar service. The lounge’s name is an homage to the Big Bonanza Saloon that was once located at the original Kimball House Hotel. Bonanza is open from 6 p.m. to close.

CL's #ATLDoughnutSmackdown needs your vote

Doughnuts are having a moment right now. To be fair, they never really went away — Krispy Kreme, the cronut craze, famed institutions such as the original Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Ore., etc. But the popularity of dedicated boutique doughnut shops is on the rise all over the country. The bulk of Atlanta’s doughnut renaissance is happening outside of Atlanta proper. Apart from a few intown mainstays, most of the magic is happening in the ‘burbs. With so many appealing options luring us ITP-ers to far-flung corners of metro Atlanta, we started to wonder which doughnuts were really worth the time and gas money.

The Ultimate Doughnut Smackdown was born.

“There is only we” is freshly painted above the sprawling bar at Midtown's new 5Church (1197 Peachtree St. N.E., 404-400-3669. www.5churchatlanta.com), which opened at Colony Square last Friday. Open for dinner seven nights a week, "5Church combines a technique-driven menu with cutting-edge design and genuine hospitality for a memorable dining experience," says the press release. It is the third location from restaurateurs Patrick Whalen, Ayman Kamel, Alejandro Torio and Jamie Lynch. The others are located in Charlotte, N.C. and Charleston, S.C.

If you happen to find yourself at 5Church, look up and let the words sink in. There are a lot of them. It's inspirational advice not from a Pinterest meme or from the Dalai Lama, but from a 2500 year old strategic military manuscript. Chinese general Sun Tzu's The Art of War to be exact. Written in the 5th century BC, this treatise holds guidance and strategic thinking applicable to many situations, even restaurants.

Marco's Pizza opened at 798 N. Highland Ave. on June 27 after more than a year of planning. The quick-service concept fills the space once occupied by the city’s only Ben & Jerry’s, which closed in November 2011, according to What Now Atlanta.

Gusto!, the fast-casual concept from former NFL QB and Georgia native Nate Hybl will open its second Atlanta location in the former Real Chow Baby Space at 782 Ponce de Leon Ave. N.E. next month. Look for further expansion of the concept in the near future.
