Waiting for Algebra

SITTING IN LIMBO: When will Algebra’s album drop?

It’s been over a year since Carlton Hargro wrote his buzz-building article on Algebra Blessett, the promising female vocalist who, after singing backup vocals for the likes of Bilal and Monica, finally got a solo shot via Kedar Entertainment Group. (You can read the June 28, 2006, story here.) And since then ... nothing.

In the story, Hargro noted that Algebra’s CD was scheduled to come out in August 2006, “a release date that has been adjusted numerous times,” he wrote. Rodney Carmichael likes to joke to me that her album “ain’t never coming out.” I’m beginning to believe him.

I’ve had a promotional copy of Algebra’s debut album, Purpose, for several months now. Yes, it’s a neo-soul album, and it’s not going to dazzle listeners with otherworldly sounds they’ve never heard before. But it has some nice, sweet songs that showcase Algebra’s voice splendidly. The question is, will audiences get to hear it? Once scheduled for a June 12 release date, Purpose was pushed back to the end of July; then Sept. 28, and now Oct. 30. In the words of her lead single, “What Happened?”

Algebra is currently touring in Japan, and there aren’t any ATL shows on the horizon. Soon, hopefully, audiences will finally get to hear Purpose for themselves.
