Real Life Top Five: Shawty Redd

Snoop Dogg's salacious, ladies-cum-first club banger "Sexual Eruption" name-checks Atlanta producer Shawty Redd's single, "Drifter." It also defies rap convention in structure — the lone verse surfaces after three minutes of processor-tweaked hooks and bridges — and division of labor — Snoop publicly credits Redd for both producing and writing the song. Few other MCs could credibly play his performer-as-interpreter role, but it allows Snoop to reinforce his rap-transcending charisma while sharing the wealth.
