Record collector calls to keep it in the neighborhood

Posted by Chad Radford on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 7:10 PM

After attending the record show at the Marriott Hotel on Clairmont Road, this weekend, Criminal Records' Shannon Mulvaney was so distraught over the sad state of skirting the perimeter to buy music that he fired off a beautiful little tirade in the record store's weekly newsletter.

After co-worker Adam Renshaw told him about catching part of a conversation in which one elder record lord said to the other, "...for my money, it's the best Sugarloaf ever recorded..." Mulvaney decided to take action.

To remedy this situation, Criminal is in the process of organizing a Record Show in Little 5 points. According to Mulvaney's report, "We want to create a show where people can hang out and sell and buy records in a friendly environment. We'll even play music! So, if you are at all interested in having your own booth, hit me up at shannon@criminal.com. Please just don't call me out if you hear me saying I prefer the mono Rubber Soul to the stereo."

This reminds me of the time I talked to Sean at Wax n Facts (where they in fact have a used record sale EVERY DAY) about a journey to the record show. I'll never forget it. "Those guys, they don't care about music!! They don't care about getting you to listen to good music! They don't care about YOU, man!!!" It is a bit of a double-edged sword. The record show guys, they over-price things. They under-grade stuff. But they do sell records, and not enough people are even doing that these days. Shouts out to Brian Proust, who usually keeps a booth at the Taurus Productions Show. He's got great 45s, fair prices, and he'll let you listen to discs while he gives a history lesson. And by the way, of course the record show guys are dweebs. Didn't anybody watch Steve Buscemi in Ghostworld?

Call you out on preferring "Rubber Soul" in Mono? That would infer that there's an option. You would only get called out if it weren't the rainbow label Capitol original (ha!)

May I put this issue into some perspective. I used to go to everyone of those conventions I could. Thanks to closed minded overweight baby boomer sellers an dealers I was able to get: LIBERATION MUSIC: Charlie Haden Orch The White Light/White Heat LP with the plastic army men cover. The Joe Daley Trio LP on Mercury An original Impulse pressing of the Coltrane/Live at the Village Vanguard Again(w/Rashid Ali line up) bought while listening to the ignoramus dealer pontificate how Alice Coltrane was "like Yoko" when it came to Coltrane. I found most of these in boxes on the floor and paid maybe $20 total for all records I've mentioned. Compare that to the record convention run by WFMU-esque radio station in Chicago I attended It had plenty of good stuff all priced by people who knew what it was even if some of it was rough NEU LP's priced at $20. The gold is to be found in places with sociopaths looking for Hendrix records
