The Earl in East Atlanta is starting the week off with two shows that are not to be missed. First up, tonight (Mon., Aug. 19) Australian post-punk torch-bearers Witch Hats make their Atlanta debut. The Melbourne-based foursome churns out noisy and primal punk-damaged thunder from the land Down Under. It's hard not to compare the group to fellow Aussie Nick Cave and his pre-Bad Seeds antics with the Birthday Party. Witch Hats are a direct musical descendant of the Birthday Party, and the group even wrangled the original Birthday Party drummer Phill Calvert to produce their forthcoming full-length for Memphis label In the Red. The group's show tonight is part of an American debut that carries the group across the country, setting hearts and minds on fire with a blend of sinister and addictive art-punk stomps. Derek Lyn Plastic and Coffin Bound open. $7. 9 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Road. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.
Tomorrow night (Tues., Aug. 20), Dawn the Faun McCarthy whos best known as the voice behind the mystical folk outfit Faun Fables, brings it all back home with her latest Drag City Records EP, A Table Forgotten. The darkly whimsical songstress turns her gaze away from the magic forest to offer a fairytale trip into the kitchen where she cooks up ethereal atmospheres that are all about cake and how kitchen etiquette and philosophy has evolved from pagan days to modern times. Jeffrey Butzer of local band the Midwives opens. $10. 9 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Rd. 404-522-3950. www.badearl.com.
