According to a post on the Black Lips' blog the group had it's current tour of India canceled and had to flee the country to avoid going to jail over a matter of indecent exposure on "Campus Idol," which is pretty much India's version of "American Idol."
"When we got to the hotel our tour guide informed us that the that the Campus Rock Idols sponsors were pressing charges and that the police would make their arrest. At that point our tour driver informed us we would have to drive six hours to get to the next town and cross state lines where we would be out of the Tamil authorities' jurisdiction, because apparently the jail in Chennai is no joke. Word on the street said that it was teeming with tuberculosis, violence and live maggots so instead of risking going there we fled the scene. The drive ended up taking 10 hours because of a horrific accident on the road. We were also informed that all of the shows on our tour had been canceled effectively fucking all funds for the trip. This was a cultural clashing shit storm."
The post on the group's blog also explains that the group fled to Berlin where it is holed up with their Indian ally King Khan, working on a new EP.
If only "American Idol" could be this exciting... The Black Lips' album 200 Million Thousand hits the streets via Vice Records on Feb. 24th. No word yet on the above mentioned EP.

...and here I was, hoping that the boys would encounter an artistic and spiritual awakening following an extended yoga session with the maharishi. Clearly, India just doesn't know how to treat rock & roll bands anymore.
HaHa...This could have been so ironic!!! If the Lips were arrested and had gone to that jail...they might have been forced to drink their pee to survive!!!!
is it possible the black lips r full of shiite? http://newsroom.mtv.com/2009/01/27/black-lips-escape-from-india-story-was-slightly-exaggerated/ Black Lips Escape From India Story Was Slightly Exaggerated Published by Christopher "CJ" Smith on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 12:40 pm. A few hours after we posted a story about the Black Lips recent antics in India, the Lips gave another official story of what went down in the depths of India. In an interview with their blog in which they said they escaped through an emergency exit with security and possibly the police on their heels was exaggerated. So, while lead singer Cole Alexander did expose himself and make out with guitar player Ian St. Pé, no charges were ever filed and there was no police involvement over the riotous show, though the tours funding was subsequently pulled by the promoter. Exactly why the band exaggerated some of its original claims is still a bit unclear. Drummer Joe Bradley told Vice that after the show, the promoter seemed to be trying to hatch a scheme to confiscate the bands passports. But thats all pure speculation on their part. Whatever happened, the Black Lips left India and are safely in Germany, hanging out and recording with King Khan & BBQ. Today, their blog post was optimistic about their future after the failed tour: It was too bad we couldnt finish the tour, but were gonna make the best of it, and record an entire new album. Its us and King Khan and BBQ joining forces as the Defenders. We started yesterday at Moon studios, and have already completed four songs. Once were done well be giving the album away for free, and maybe do a limited vinyl pressing. I guess India wasnt ready, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise, because we are gonna make our magnum opus.
