Free dental care for musicians

Posted by Chad Radford on Tue, Apr 14, 2009 at 2:19 PM

It sounds too good to be true, but on Tuesday, April 21, MusiCares, in conjunction with Ben Massell Dental Clinic will be providing dental screenings, teeth cleaning and complete x-rays to uninsured music professionals.

These treatments will be provided free of charge to approved applicants. Those wishing to take advantage of this service must be able to document their work in the music industry for at least five years or have credited contribution to six commercially released recordings or videos (singles).

The clinic will be held from from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at:

Ben Massell Dental Clinic

700 14th Street NW in Atlanta.

In order to participate and schedule an appointment, you must contact:

MusiCares at 615-327-0050 or 1-877-626-2748 (toll free).

"Those wishing to take advantage of this service must be able to document their work in the music industry for at least five years or have credited contribution to six commercially released recordings or videos (singles)." Well, those stipulations rule out about 95% of the Atlanta musicians who probably need some free dental care. As Tom Waits once said - "the large print giveth, and the small print taketh away."

Agreed - five years is a crazy-long time requirement. After five years as a working musician, I'd think most people would have either figured out independent dental care or taken a day job that provides it; most people don't have the dental routine/diet/genetics that going five years without a dental visit is a viable long-term plan. Two years or a varying number of recording credits, I could see as reasonable.

It is a good news for the entertainers to have a free dental check-up for them. It wouldn't be that easy having some dental problem while doing the profession.

It's very funny to read about 'free dental care for musicians'. But where is free dental care for singers or producers? As said James in first comment, MusiCares substantially reduced its expenses by great requirments:)
