Well-known Wings hits include “Goodnight Tonight,” and “Venus and Mars/Rock Show.”

Good, by not announcing the unofficial tour Paul almost tricked me into driving to DC to see him.

As part of the park's Green Concert series, the Paul McCartney concert will help raise money for park maintenance and expansion. That's the official word from the Piedmont Park Conservancy and Live Nation.

I am a grandiose Beatles/Wings fanatic, but I'll be damned if I'll fight the crowd at and all around Piedmont just to be in the same airspace as the Great Sir Paul. Enjoy, Atlanta!

Who didn't know? Perhaps a younger generation. Even in the late 1980s, when I casually mentioned Paul McCartney, a teenager responded? "Wasn't he in Wings? That's an OLD band!" None of his peers made fun of his comment. Well, yeah, I certainly wouldn't have described him primarily (and certainly not exclusively) as "bassist of ... Wings." I do recall my only close encounter with McCartney, inside the backstage entrance of Carnegie Hall in the '90s, immediately prior to the NYC premiere of his Liverpool Oratorio. The only other person there (inside the backstage doorway, that is) was a reporter from the NY Times. Paul, with Linda on arm, but surprisingly without entourage, entered with a bright flamboyance, made a quip in the direction of the Times reporter on his side of the hall, while Linda looked at me on the other side with a speechless kind of "Who are you?" face as they quickly passed. Almost as much fun as when I nearly spilled a plate of food on Elton John while standing in a buffet line. He has that same kind of quizzical look on his face that Linda McCartney had. Obviously some CL contributing writers are not household personalities in a few circles, though we keep trying. (Just let us sneak backstage or give us a plate of food. We'll do the rest.) --Mark Gresham

Rather: Elton *HAD* that same kind of quizzical look on his face that Linda McCartney had, at the time he was near-recipient of the cuisine d'jour in question. It was temporary. --Mark Gresham
