In the year since the Atlanta-based MC and local legend Christopher "Jax" Thurston died while performing onstage at Lenny's (Nov. 4) with his Binkis Recs crew, his friends, family and scene collaborators have refused to let his spirit die.
Tonight's visual arts exhibit at City of Ink tattoo parlor in Castleberry Hill is a celebration of his life, but it's also intended to spread his legacy to those who didn't know him before he passed.
[Jax] was not only an astonishing artist, but he was a fan, a Hip Hop encyclopedia, rapper Senor Kaos explained to HipHopDX.com. With his death there's still so many people that are un-familiar with him. The Who's Jax art show is designed to not only keep Jax's legacy alive, but also to show Jax in a medium people have never seen him before, and that's on a canvas.
Partner-in-rhyme and one-third of Jax's Binkis Recs crew, Craig "Flux" Singleton who is also a visual artist talked about the concept behind the show yesterday on WRFG-FM (89.3). All of the artists contributing pieces to the exhibit knew Jax personally, he said, which is important because Flux wanted conceptual pieces that portrayed the many facets of Jax rather than portraiture.
In 2010, fans should expect more Binkis Recs albums featuring Jax, said Flux, as well as solo material from the prolific MC who released five albums and a mixtape during his life.
Tonight's event features music from Binkis Recs' DJ Mafioso, as well as DJs Fudge and Rasta Root who toured Japan with Jax and Phife Dawg a few years ago. Catering provided by Marco's Pita where Jax once worked as a manager at the old Clark Atlanta University location.
