Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and other Southern states have received their just due when it comes to musical heritage, but what about Arkansas? Oxford American magazine – based at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark. – gives props to the state with 11th Edition Southern Music, a double CD free with the purchase of its December '09 issue. The first disc begins with an intro from Lucinda Williams and features a general overview of "Southern masters," including such artists as Bukka White and Memphis Slim, while the second disc focuses on notable musical Arkansans from the last 50 years. Highlights include country singer Maxine Brown's raunchy (for 1969, anyway) tune "Take It Out in Trade" and hip-hop duo Suga City's thoughtful, cello-accented "Savoir Faire." There aren't likely to be a lot of names you recognize on either disc, but both amateur musicologists and Southern boosters are going to find plenty of rare gems. (Oxford American) 4 out of 5 stars.
