Gawker has a post up about MTV deciding to ban Lady Gaga and Beyonce's cra-a-azy new "Telephone" video (above). They pretty much get it right with their analysis, writing that MTV is totally fooling itself to think its opinion on music videos matters at all anymore.
In my screed last month on MTV dropping "Music Television" from its logo, I mentioned that the Internet has fast become the go-to source for music videos. Gawker's post notes that "Telephone" had already garnered over 13 million views in three days on YouTube; it's now over 15 million and rising fast. Ah, MTV, how your star has fallen.

in my opinion lady gaga is wack. at first i thought i didnt get it but now im pretty sure there's nothing to "get". the image doesnt match the music. very contrived
more relevant - lady gaga or peopleofwalmart.com? why not both? http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/14-styles-gaga-stole-from-people-of-walmart
totally contrived, indeed. but ain't that the point? either she's using performance art to comment on the insanity of celebrity, or she's totally insane. and doesn't her need for constant reinvention say just as much about us as consumers of it all? she's our pop culture meme come home to roost. in fact, i'm pretty sure lady gaga is referenced somewhere in the book of Revelations by design if not by name.
