Gucci Mane to be back in court ... civil court

Posted by Ben Westhoff on Tue, Mar 16, 2010 at 7:33 PM

If you wanted to see Gucci Mane perform last year, you likely didn't get your wish. As we reported in our November story,  "The case of the canceled Gucci Mane concerts," he failed to show up to shows around the country, due to his various prison and rehab stints. Drugs and lawlessness are nothing new to rock and rap stars, of course, but promoters insisted his management took money for shows they knew he couldn't attend.

Now, Gucci and his manager, Debra Antney, and his booking agent, Johnnie Cabbell, are facing a lawsuit from Florida promoter Stephen Gold, who alleges foul play in the wake of Gucci's failure to show for a November concert in Lakeland. (The suit lists 20 similar cases.) Meanwhile, a Pittsburgh attorney has written the Secret Service echoing this complaint.

Cabbell repeats to the AJC some of the same things he told us last year, specifically that he wouldn't have booked shows for Gucci if he was aware the rapper couldn't attend. But, again, he often sounds cagey.

“If they had asked for the money back, I would’ve given them the money,” Cabbell said. “We tried. They didn’t want the money … they wanted the show.”

Sure, where there's smoke there's not always fire, but the mismanagement of Gucci's shows last year feels downright criminal.
