SXSW: Notes from the road pt. 2

This is Chris Jefferies. I met Chris while he was busking in an alley near downtown Austin with his band Plastic Fantastic Lover from San Francisco. They played a primitive, gypsy, arty junk yard kind of sound, complete with accordionorn -- though it was hard to hear him or his band mates singing over the hordes of drunk people, and the din of music blasting from every direction. I gave him a few bucks and he gave me a CDR wrapped in some antique magazine pages.

He asked if I had ever heard of Wonder Root I said of course. He was supposed to play there back in Feb., but he went to Miami instead because Atlanta was "too cold" for his liking in Feb. -- a legitimate concern when you're traveling the country playing on the street.

Turbo Fruits from Nashville played at Emo's, opening for the Howlies. The number of people in attendance didn't correlate with the lack of parking spaces outside, at least not at first. By the time the Howlies took the stage the room had filled up. Hank III was playing Emo's outside stage, so there were a lot of drunken cowboy hats stumbling around, looking mean -- especially the ladies.

Justin and Aaron of the Howlies.

I tried to walk down to Scoot Inn to see the Coathangers and Golden Triangle last night, but as I walked under the interstate I was hit up for weed and/or money 4 times (I didn't have either). The club was at least another 11 blocks away and that safety instinct kicked in. Coathangers are playing in a few minutes over at Epoch Cafe and Golden Triangle is playing a Vice party at End of an Ear at 5 p.m.

Here's a rough guide to some more Atlanta-related shows going on today.
