Late Last Night: Free Energy, the xx, and a 'Nicki Minaj Diss'

Posted by Spencer Sloan on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 4:30 PM

1) The xx brought "Islands" to Fallon. Word was they're "snoozy" live, but I thought this was kind of "great," no? Clear, confident, well played. The song builds, then it recedes. Builds, then recedes. I love it. Although, I guess I could see this type of performance being difficult to enjoy at a crowded, noisy, smoky bar. The takeaway: If you're going to see the xx live, make sure it's either on a late night talk show or in the privacy of your own sitting/concert room.

The xx, "Islands"

2) The band: Free Energy. The song: "Free Energy." GO! People are wild about this band, so naturally I want to be wild about this band, too. I followed all the steps: I downloaded the mp3, I read up on them on the blogs, I studied the artwork, I downloaded another mp3, I set the DVR, and I stayed up late. ... So what the hell was that? To quote a friend and actual fan of the album, "They were sort of a ridiculous mess. Like they were daydreaming about being a band on Letterman long before they had songs or (um) rehearsals, and that's what we got to see." Exactiles. The band had fun, but Unfortune 000, I didn't.

Free Energy, "Free Energy"

Bonus: While technically this video, titled "Nicki Minaj Diss,” isn't a performance by a music artist on a late night talk show, I did, in fact, see it late last night, and it does appear to have been shot at night, and it is awesome so you know, rules are meant to be exceptions and JUST WATCH IT!

Keys, "Nicki Minaj Diss"
