Coathangers survive gnarly festivals

Local band the Coathangers has survived the first (and last?) MtyMx, a three-day festival organized by Brooklyn D.I.Y. promoter Todd P and held in Monterrey, Mexico.  The event was rife with problems.  A third of the 75 bands scheduled to play canceled (possibly due to the drug-related violence that plagued the city in the days leading up to the festival), buses shuttling fans from the just-ended SXSW in Austin, Texas were late or never materialized, and Todd P himself didn't show up until late into the fest's first night.  Suffice it to say that morale and attendance were low.

Before their day-one appearance at MtyMx, the Coathangers played several shows at the notoriously sweaty and gritty SXSW.  On March 27 the quartet stole the show in L.A. at Waved Out, another petite first-time music festival put on by indie blog Aquarium Drunkard.

If you're impressed by the Coathangers' tenacity, or just want to see a good show, catch the four young women at 529 on April 6.
