Bear in Heaven opened for Cymbals Eat Guitars at the Earl on Thurs., March 11. It was a sold out show, and since smoking wasn't allowed at least a quarter of the attendance was outside choking down cigarettes at any given time, making the room easy to navigate.
Bear In Heaven played as a trio, and at least two-thirds of the group, Jon Philpot (guitars, keyboards etc.), and Adam Wills (bass) are ATL-born New York transplants. The band played a set of spacious avant-garde pop and new wave, imbued with androgynous and anthemic choruses, sticking mostly to the material from their latest release, Beast Rest Fourth Mouth. The hometown crowd hung on every note and cheered wildly at ever cue. Cymbals Eat Guitars closed the show, and photographer Matt Smith captured these images of both bands.
