Last night, for the first time ever, I watched a guy use Shazam to successfully identify the name of the last song playing over the house speakers before Yeasayer walked onstage. He held his iPhone in the air above the crowd (so the app could work its black arts), and then, mere seconds later, waved the screen in his friend's faces. From several rows away, I could easily read, "Goodbye, Horses," by Q Lazzarus. The friends took turns craning their heads forward slightly and then, in a Pavlovian chain, threw them back, "Ooooooooh, that song!" The guy, meanwhile, smiled and nodded, satisfied with himself and his all-song-knowing phone. "You're welcome!" Somewhere else in the room, someone tapped someone else on the shoulder and asked, "Hey, do you know what song this is?" Maybe that person knew the answer, and maybe they didn't. What I'm trying to say is: it's a brave, new world out there! BE PREPARED!
