Supergrass call it quits

The death of Supergrass is the final nail in the coffin of the Britpop revival — sure, Radiohead’s still the biggest band on the planet, and yeah, Blur still eixsts, but they’re both so far removed from the place they started that they may as well be different bands altogether.

As noted below, after a decade and a half of playing second fiddle to those other Limey blokes - Videohead or something - Oxford rock quartet Supergrass have decided to call it quits. Besides creating the highly memorable music video for Clueless soundtrack standout and all-around impeccable jam “Alright” (above), the band leaves behind a stellar run of ’90s LPs and some pretty decent material from the aughts. Much of the band’s best work was compiled on the album Supergrass is 10: Best of 94-04, a good starting point for any curious, casual fan.

Supergrass were one of many similar-sounding British bands to be snapped up by money-hungry record label execs in the Great Radiohead Hype of the mid-’90s; though unlike most of their alt-rock peers, they managed to carve out their own existence, allowing their sound to evolve at an organic pace while maintaining the Britpop sneer that made them famous in the first place. In a way, the death of Supergrass is the final nail in the coffin of the Britpop revival - sure, Radiohead’s still the biggest band on the planet, and yeah, Blur still eixsts, but they’re both so far removed from the place they started that they may as well be different bands altogether.
