Record Store Day kicked-off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Since the early bird supposedly gets the worm I went to Criminal at 9:30, But to my chagrin there were already 100 people lined-up. Within minutes the line was 300 deep. It didn’t feel like there had been any more hype poured into RSD this year than in the previous 2 years, but something has changed. More people drank the Kool-Aid and rampant consumerism was on.

I had scoped out the limited releases earlier in the week to determine “Records I need” vs. “Records I want.” Luckily I nabbed most of what I needed: Black Moth Super Rainbow’s Eating Us double LP on an oil slick swirl of colored vinyl, stamped in shiny silver foil -- totally awesome. Devo “Fresh” 12-inch, Fela Kuti Live in LA 1969 10-inch, Sound Garden “Hunted Down” 7-inch, Sonic Youth reissues et. al. I won't bore you with a laundry list, but these records are scatter-shot throughout stores across the country. Which stores get what is a crap shoot. Criminal didn’t get any of the Pavement LPs with the fan-selected track list, and the reissue of John Fahey’s Yellow Princess missed Little 5 Points altogether. There were only 500 Fahey records pressed, and it’s a good one. A call to Decatur CD revealed that they had 1 copy in the store so I hoped on the bus to Decatur. Inside the store, next to counter, was a cooler full of delicious, fancy pants high-gravity beers. I eased down a couple of Dogfish Heads before getting back on the bus to catch Those Darlin’s over at Criminal, but I missed them. There were a ton of things going on this weekend (Dogwood Fest, Sweet Water Fest, ATL Film Fest, Freaknik). Traffic was a bear and MARTA was moving slowly.

Back in L5P I caught an acoustic set by CL contributor Slim Chance (James Kelly) and Doug Morton, followed by a set of pretty, hypnotic guitar rhythms and textures from old-school Atlanta post-punk/new wave  icon Kevin Dunn at Wax-n-Facts. At Criminal, I caught the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Mathis Hunter and Venice is Sinking. PBR’s were being handed-out liberally, and after a steady regiment of daytime drinking, I needed a nap.

Later Rodriguez took the stage, looking like the bad guy from Enter the Dragon. Nerd Parade was his backing band, and they kept up, but there wasn’t a lot of chemistry between them. Not to knock them or their abilities. It was a last minute pairing afterall. But it was also the dog end of an exhausting day. The after-party at the Star Bar just wasn’t in the cards for me. On the way out a Chunklet T-shirt of a pimply faced kid looking at a record hung by the door in ironic protest of the day’s events, proclaiming “I collect records because pussy hates me.” A lot of dudes laughed and looked nervously looked down at the armfuls of records they were carrying out the door. One young lady with an armful of records looked puzzled for a few minutes then laughed, “I didn’t get it until I saw the pimples on his face!”

Oh sweet irony.
