Parlortone releases Excavated Shellac global sampler

Excavated Shellac

In the liner notes to the Strings LP, released April 13 via Dust-to-Digital's Parlortone vinyl imprint, Excavated Shellac blogger Jonathan Ward states "Most of us were never meant to hear this music." As such the record isn't a journey to an exotic locale. Strings is a global sampler compiling string music from around the world (circa 1925-1954) that, prior to this release, would have been virtually impossible to find.

Chad Radford:  Tell me about Jonathan Ward.

Lance Ledbetter:  I met Jonathan through Excavated Shellac where he would focus on one song from a 78 record by posting the audio on the blog with a ton of notes and research every week. I contacted him and asked if he'd thought about compiling a release. He already had a couple of great projects together and we've been working on compilations for the last year-and-a-half. We pressed 1,500 copies of the Strings record and don't have plans for a CD at the moment.

Is there a theme to the LP?

What Jonathon does differently from other old music compilers is steer clear of the mystique. It's not a 'weird, eerie sounds of the Orient' kind of record. It's grouped together as string music from around the world.

So this is the first of many global comps to come?

Yes and he has some releases that focuse on certain regions. The big one we're working on now, which should be out this year, is a 4xCD box set of African 78s from all over the continent -- tons on liner notes and photographs going all the way back from the 1920s to the early '60s.

Tell me about the Bolivian, Alberto Ruiz y su Lira Incaica's "Pacenita"

That's probably my favorite song on the record. You hear these two little miniature guitars and you can hear the feet dancing on the wooden floor while they're playing and the hand claps -- what a masterpiece.
