Chad Rad's weekend concert picks May 28 - 29

Fri., May 28 -- Dream brothers Gil Mantera and the Ultimate Donny wield the cutting edge of electro, synth-pop party soundtracks with a soft-focus image and a white leather disposition. The Party Dream's sound is a breezy, dance floor throwback to the Miami Vice decade that's cut from a cloth of vibrant, '80s pop beats and over-the-top sex jam crooning that takes shape in a scene of feathered hair, big bass and billowing clouds of smoke machine ambiance. Guyliner and Sunbears open the show. $10. 9 p.m. The Earl, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-522-3950.

Fri., May 28 -- The Letters Organize, Whores, Wolves and Jackals. $?. 9 p.m. 529. 529 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-228-6769.

Fri., May 28-Sat., May 29 -- Memorial Day weekend is upon us once again, which means it's time for BUBBAPALOOZA. The Star Bar's annual redneck rock 'n' roll and hillbilly punk throwdown fires up to raise funds for the family of founder Gregory Dean Smalley, who died from complications related to HIV several years back. Brace yourself for a weekend of performances from the Blacktop Rockets, Slim Chance & the Convicts, Dex Romweber Duo, Charlie Pickett and dozens of others. And don't forget, there's gonna be a whole mess of barbecue courtesy of Slope's in the vinyl lounge. $10-$15. Fri., 9 p.m.; Sat., 6 p.m. Star Bar. 437 Moreland Ave. 404-681-9018.

Mahony (Standard 8): piano, organ --William J. Brigsby: bass -- Claire Lodge: guitar, melodica.

The combo will perform songs from the Waits catalog ranging from favorites "Hoist That Rag" and "I don't Wanna Grow Up" to the slightly obscure "Just the Right Bullets", keeping some of the tunes faithful to the original versions and putting their own spin on others.
