Long before Lil Wayne’s Rebirth, Lil Jon’s Crunk Rock was going to be the great synthesis of hip-hop and rock, with everyone from P.O.D. to Kid Rock rumored to be on the album at one point or another. Now, after years of Chinese Democracy-like delays and setbacks, Crunk Rock has finally been released, but it is nothing like the album we were expecting five years ago.
In its place, this album is full of the kind of unremarkable electro-influenced hip-hop that rules Top 40 charts and less adventurous dancefloors. One of Lil Jon’s strengths has always been his skill as a producer, but some of the tracks here don’t sound anything close to crunk. Instead of fat baselines and synths, we have tracks produced by electronic DJs David Guetta, Laidback Luke and Steve Aoki. At times, it seems like Lil Jon is facing a musical identity crisis. Why else would Crunk Rock have two tracks featuring the Grammy-nominated (seriously) LMFAO, but not a single verse from his “Yeah’ collaborators Usher or Ludacris?
Still, at other times, Crunk Rock sounds exactly like what you would expect from a Lil Jon album. Tracks like “Throw It Up, Pt 2.” and “G Walk” have all the hallmarks of classic crunk. Some former Lil Jon collaborators like Pitbull and the Yin Yang Twins even show up, but their contributions lack the spark that made their previous efforts with Lil Jon chart-toppers.
“Killas” is the only track that sounds like it was leftover from Crunk Rock's original format, and it’s easy to see why it stayed. Lil Jon, Ice Cube, The Game, and Elephant Man all step up to the plate on the track, delivering quality verses with vicious attitude that matches the rock instrumental. Ultimately, “Killas” serves as a reminder of everything Crunk Rock could have been, and is just an example of everything it’s not.
come on man you know you got a bromance. you probably still rock that OutKast…
Yes, 14 is the correct answer. I'll pass your info along to the group's manager,…
That was January of 2007, and they are 21 now, so I'm guessing 14?
